Counterfeit Advantage and Frontline Counterfeit Advantage and Frontline: Issues and Risksby Stacy Pober (17 March 2004)The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Bayer Animal Health, andMerial recently issued press releases about a recent investigationthat found that 'counterfeit' versions of Bayer Advantage and Merial'sFrontline were being sold to consumers. This issue recently came upon VETMED, an email discussion list that I moderate.Because there seemed to be a lot of speculation among pet owners aboutthis issue, I decided to look into the matter a little more thoroughly. The EPA documents and company press releases, see references at endhave been very vague regarding any specific problems that have come upwith the counterfeit versions of these products. For example, theydo not mention whether any pet has been harmed by a counterfeit versionof either of these products. One of the problems here is the many meanings that the EPA andmanufacturers have given to the word 'counterfeit'. Most of us thinkof a counterfeit as something that is a bogus, imiation version ofsomething. And indeed, a counterfeit drug may be one that is completelydifferent than the genuine article.
However, the EPA and the companiesthat make Advantage and Frontline also consider a product counterfeitif it is the exact same chemical as the genuine one, but if it waswas manufactured, labelled and originally sold by the manufacturerfor use in another country. For example, Bayer Advantage ismade and sold in France. However, if a U.S.
Retailer imports theFrench product, relabels it in English and sells it to U.S. Consumers, the company and the EPA consider that to be a counterfeit. The recent joint EPA/Merial/Bayer investigation was focussed on theretail sale of these pesticides. In some cases, the retaillers hadrelabelled the products to indicate U.S. Origin, and then resoldthem to consumers in pet stores. But there has been another source for 'gray market' versions ofFrontline and Advantage. Some American consumers have found itcheaper to purchase these from foreign internet or mail-order vendorsthan from their veterinarians.
These products are not purchased forresale, and according to the purchasers who have posted to some ofthe email lists, the imported products are shipped to them with theoriginal Australian labelling. My specific questions about this were whether there have been any petsharmed by counterfeit Advantage or Frontline. I also wanted to know ifthere were cases where a different pesticide was used in a counterfeitversion, or where the correct chemical was used but the dosages weresignificantly higher or lower than the label indicated.I did a little research and contacted Bayer, Merial, and the EPA on 3/15/2004.1) BAYER ANIMAL HEALTHI called the Bayer Animal Health customer line and spoke to'David' and 'Andrea'. (It seems that the drug and chemical companyphone reps are just like Cher and Madonna in that they go by onename only. I tried to get last names so that I could cite my sourcesmore specifically but I had to give up on that.
They seem dismayedat the idea they might be identified by surname. )Here is the information from Bayer:Advantage is sold in Australia, but K9 Advantix is NOT.Advantage is legitimately sold only through vets in all areasof the world.

Written by Vivian PhillipsJun 07, 2017I am very happy with the results of applying Frontline Plus to my 12 lb rat terrier. We live in an area with lots of deer ticks that transmite Lyme dissease and he has been healthy for his 10 years of life this far.
I only apply Frontline Plus every two months. My dog also receives at the vet's office the Lyme dissease vacine once a year in the spring. Frontline Plus costs a little more than othe similar products but I will not change it. I save money by ordering Frontline Plus on line to Joe's Pet Meds, and it always arrives. Written by CyberfranceApr 07, 2017I have 6 smaller dogs and I've been using both Frontline Plus and the generic for about 10 years.

I find that if I buy in the largest size, I can split the dosage among all 6 dogs. They have never had a flea among them. I live in Maryland in the USA and it's hot here in summer. Fleas can be a real problem. I highly recommend Frontline Plus and the generic. If you have a severe flea problem, it is wise to first have your dogs bathed before you apply the liquid.
I also have my dog yard treated for fleas with Sevin powder in the spring. So far, so good. You will save a lot of money if you purchase your dog supplies here. I have been doing so for MANY years. I recommend them all of the time.
